Scouts, Adults, and Guest Webelos
Quotes from Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts
- For Scouts
- "A Scout is never taken by surprise; he knows exactly what to do when anything unexpected happens."
- "In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed."
- "A Scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances."
- For Scouters
- "Training boy leaders to run their troop is the Scoutmaster's most important job."
- "Train Scouts to do a job, then let them do it."
- "Never do anything a boy can do."
- "When you want a thing done, ‘Don’t do it yourself’ is a good motto for Scoutmasters."
- "See things from the boy's point of view."
- For Everyone
- "Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one."
- "Try and leave this world a little better than you found it."
Scouts
- White Stag - National Youth Leadership Training. One week at Camp Redwing, either June 12-18 or July 17-23, 2011. Our own scouts
Jonathan F and Zach W are on staff for the July session.
- Order of The Arrow Election OA Requirements and Info PDF
- Troop Leadership Election
- Winter Camping List PDF
- 2011 Health Form PDF
- BSA High Adventure Bases - these are opportunities available for older Scouts. The Crossroads Council
usually sends a contingent, some local troops sometimes have spots available, and our Troop would
like to go to at least one of these - but it requires a large time (over a week) and financial commitment (over $1000) from all involved
along with planning well in advance. These are also offered to Order of the Arrow members
at a great discount in return for a week of service to the base. Apply soon
if interested! Note that these trips generally require Scouts to be age 14 or older and meeting the height/weight limits
shown in the 2011 Health Form PDF.
- High Adventure Weekend Trips - older Scouts are often interested in doing more high adventure types of activities,
but are not able to do a full week at a BSA High Adventure Camp. Following are some locations that are suitable
for a long weekend high adventure - possibly as a Patrol choice campout, a seperate high adventure campout, or
even as a troop campout. Any Scout or Scouter that would like to volunteer to be on a High Adventure Troop Committee
would be a great help!
- White Water Rafting in West Virginia - whitewater excursions
and a way to earn the Whitewater Merit Badge
- Torrent Falls Climbing Adventure - located in Red River Gorge, KY.
A unique rock climbing experience using Via Ferrata, a climbing system that aids the climber
by cables, and hand and foot rungs.
- St. Regis Canoe Area - located in Adirondack Park, NY.
Canoe trips, hiking, fishing. About 750 miles from Fishers, so this might be a bit too far for a long weekend trip.
- COPE and Climbing/Rappelling - Council-sponsored events at Camp Ransburg or Red
River Gorge, KY, for more information see the troop scribe for a flyer or contact
the council's COPE committee at copeclimb.cac@gmail.com. 2011 dates include
Apr 16, Apr 30, May 14, May 21, Aug 20, Sep 3, Sep 17, Oct 8, Oct 22, and Oct 29.
Adults
- Parent's and New Leader's Guide to a Boy-Led
Troop - suggestions on how to take the next steps to becoming more of
a boy-led troop
- Merit Badge Counselor Form PDF - for adults who
would like to teach Merit Badges
- Adult Training
- Mrs. McBride is the adult training coordinator for Troop 205. Please give her copies of
any training records you may have so that the troop has a record
of your training.
- All adults having contact with scouts should have Youth Protection training.
All adults should also have Boy Scout Leader Fast Start Training. These may
be taken online at the BSA Online Training Center. Many
other training modules are on that website also, including Hazardous Weather and
Troop Committee Challenge.
- At least one adult on any campout must have Hazardous Weather Training.
- "New Leader Essentials" has been replaced by "This is Scouting" training.
- Committee members are "trained" after taking Youth Protection, Fast Start, New Leader
Essentials, and Troop Committee Challenge. Then you can wear the red "trained"
patch.
- To be considered "trained" as a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster, Youth Protection,
Fast Start, New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster-specific, and
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training must be taken. The easiest
way to do this is probably at summer camp. Otherwise, OLS is a weekend campout
and SM-specific is a day at Belzer. Then you can wear the "trained" patch.
- Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters can also work towards the Boy Scout Leader's
Training Award - and then get to wear the green square knot patch. Basic Training
and 2 years as a registered leader are required, plus any 5 of the 12 items listed
in the Leaders Award PDF record sheet.
- Additional training oppurtunities are numerous. A few from the Crossroads
Council that might be of interest to adults and a few that are open to older Scouts are...
- Voyageur Canoe Training, advanced canoe training
for adults who can then offer additional canoe experiences to their troop.
Training is two weekends at Belzer. Dates are May
14-15, May 21-22, 2011 or Sept 10-11, 17-18, 2011.
- Marlinspike knot training, one weekends at Belzer. Dates are Mar 4-6, 2011.
- Wood Badge for the 21st Century, advanced leader training, 2 3-day sessions.
Dates are Apr 28-30, June 2-4, 2011 or Aug 13-15, Sept 17-19, 2011.
- Wilderness First Aid Basics,
one member of any Philmont group must be trained,
4 3-hour evening sessions at Belzer. Dates are TBD, 2011.
- And a few more from the Del-Mi District...
- New Leader Essentials, SM-specific, Troop Committee Challenge - Apr 23, 2011 or
Sept 10, 2011 at Belzer
- Outdoor Leader Skills - Mar 18-20, 2011 or Sept 30-Oct 2, 2011 at Camp K
- And possibly the ultimate in Adult Training, at the
Philmont Scout Ranch Training Center
- Philmont Leadership Challenge, Go Beyond Wood Badge! - an intense week of
adult training.
